Looking back to move forward.

“What’s past is prologue.” - Shakespeare.

The history of white supremacy and Christian nationalism in the United States is well documented. It has shaped the ways in which people understand the Christian faith and what it means to be American, which in turn has shaped legislation, policy and policing in this country. Over the last few decades these two ideologies evolved into what we now know as White Christian Nationalism. This is the ideological premise that fueled the insurrection of January 6th and many more pieces of legislation and other government sanctioned activities that target anyone and everyone who isn’t white or Christian.

Understanding the past is critical to navigating the present and changing our future. Next week (3/23) join me for a discussion on the FBI and White Christian Nationalism with civil rights veteran Dr. Clarence Jones and author Dr. Lerone Martin. You can attend in-person if you’re in the Bay Area or virtually but you need to RSVP on the event link below.

From the University of San Francisco website:

Join us for an exciting conversation with Dr. Lerone A. Martin and Dr. Clarence B. Jones, moderated by Rev. Dr. Ronné Wingate Sims, about Dr. Martin’s new book: The Gospel of J. Edgar Hoover: How the FBI Aided and Abetted the Rise of White Christian Nationalism (Princeton, 2023): “The shocking untold story of how the FBI partnered with white evangelicals to champion a vision of America as a white Christian nation” -- and how the FBI abused its power in a systematic campaign to wiretap, malign, and harass Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Dr. Jones himself. Click here to RSVP for in-person or via Zoom.
